All computers used to have LEDs on their cases, which indicated the hard drive's activity. It was quite useful, because we could tell if the computer was working or if the operating system hanged. If your computer is not equipped with such a LED, you can use HddLed Indicator to place one on your desktop. The application does not include advanced or complex features, but it allows you to assign separate LEDs for individual partitions and customize them.

HddLed Indicator's setup file is only 481 KB, so it should not take more than a minute to download and install the application. It works with any Windows platform and you can find a separate HddLed Indicator version, which provides support for the recently released Windows 8. The best part is that your computer's performance will not be affected too much while the application is running.

When launched, the software will place a series of LED indicators on your desktop, in the upper left corner of the screen. By default, HddLed Indicator will display one LED for each partition, but you may click its system tray icon to bring up a tabbed settings panel. You can show or hide indicators for each logical disk, by selecting one or more partitions. Furthermore, the application allows you to enable LED indicators for physical drives as well and hide or show them in a similar fashion.

It is also possible to activate an "all-in-one" LED, which indicates the activity of all devices. If you are familiar with LED indicators, then it should be obvious that your desktop LEDs will blink when you read or write data. If you hover with the mouse cursor over a LED, a tooltip will appear, with various statistics regarding the partition's rate and amount of transferred data.

The appearance of the indicators can be customized. You may select different colors, to indicate that your hard drive is reading, writing or idle, change the indicator's opacity level and update interval. You can also use the system tray icon as an indicator, but a more interesting feature is the possibility of using the Scroll Lock LED, on the keyboard, as a similar tool.

Pros

The application places LED hard drive indicators on your desktop. You can enable or disable indicators separately, for each partition or physical drive. It is also possible to place an indicator in the system tray or use the Scroll Lock LED as a hard drive indicator.

Cons

You can not change colors for individual LEDs. While HddLed Indicator is running on your computer, you will see your hard drive's activity at all times.
